Sometimes, I wonder how my life would be different had I beat Terell Fields in the cursive writing contest in middle school.
I think the 2nd Place finish stuck with me because I saw Terell’s cursive writing submission, and I didn’t believe it was significantly better than mine. I want to be clear that I’m not throwing shade. I just looked at his work side-by-side with mine and didn’t see something that stood out as worthy 1st place in the contest.
Terell didn’t follow the cursive style of the guides — not as well as I did. Now knowing what I understand about the world and being an artist, I didn’t win first place because I never strayed away from the cursive writing guides. I imitated so well that I looked like the opposite of original and creative.
The creative liberties that my classmate took WAS the standout part of their work. The literal definition of extraordinary.
what if I had of won?
Melissa imagine that I would have won. I come in with my stroke for stroke imitation of what was provided to me. That could’ve led me into a life where I ignore my imagination and just do things the way that they’ve always been done. Yes, I would be shaped into a Fundamentalist.
