I predict that at least one of my grandchildren will share my love for fine films and sit with me to watch movies. I imagine I’ll say things to them like the following:
- That’s right, earbuds used to have cables attached to them.
- Yep, we used to have these things called smart phones and they really wear that big.
- Believe it or not, there used to be cars that were driven completely manually, that used a metal key to turn on, had a handle that you wound up/down to work the windows.
- Seriously, steering and acceleration were completely done by the driver.
- Phones used to need a wire connected to them to work, and there were even some in public places you could use putting coins inside.
- We used to call a phone that needed a cable connected a landline, but we only started using the term landline after mobile phones came out. Before mobile phones became mainstream, a landline phone was just called a phone.
- That’s right at one time, there used to be money made out of metal coins.
- Libraries were these places you went to learn things by reading books.
- Music used to come on CDs, and you could make your own mix of your favorite songs. AND when I was really young, music was sold on cassette tapes. Hold on a second; I’ll show you. ‘Hey, Siri, web search images of a cassette tape on the Apple TV in the movie room!’
- They’re acting secretive like that because smoking marijuana used to be illegal in the United States.
- Kids used to prefer playing outside. In fact, a lot of kids had bicycles they rode around on. Yup, fully manual-pedaling too.
Also, I feel like at least one or more of my grandchildren will get the nickname Cub. Maybe I will just call all of them a cub. We’ll see what happens. Nicknames come to me organically.
I’m already geeking out at the idea of having a little one be into movies from my time as much as I am.
