Turns out the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, commonly known as anamorphic or anamorphic widescreen, is not an arbitrary figure as I’ve always thought. On my journey of video editing mastery, I discovered that the 2.35:1 aspect ratio comes from combining two of human beings’ favorite aspect ratios together.
When you position a 16:9 box and a 9:16 box side by side where the 16:9 box has an identical height to the 9:16 box, the joined boxes create one with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. My design nerd mind has been blown. In Adobe Illustrator, I drew an image to show it.
I just wanted to geek out about that. Who knew?!
