Programmable window panes and no more need for paper signs

Today, I noticed printed paper signs written on patio exit doors of a favorite restaurant, and I thought of a technology I’d like to see: programmable glass panes. Call this my prediction of a future technology.

Wouldn’t it be cool if a restaurant manager could program the glass panes on doors and windows to show whatever graphic they wanted: advertisement, announcement, warning message they wanted? How about adjusting the opacity of the glass to a dark tint on the bright side of the building?

Picture motion graphics too like video advertisements from other businesses or sister companies. How about changing a single window pane next to a toddler into a mirror display for the kid to entertainment themself?

An employee would display the business hours, telephone number, website, etc on one or more glass panes that are most visible from a traffic light. Or even a giant QR code that takes a customer to a web page website displaying a time-based offer and link to install the restaurant’s mobile app.

For exiting customers, the inside of the glass doors could show a QR code that takes them a short survey, Google Review form, or both — followed by a coupon, of course.

I think this is a very likely use case for display windows that we’ll see in the future. What I’m describing is technology that already exists in TV’s, right? I vaguely feel like Samsung has a TV/display with a transparent screen.

I doubt that the used case I’m describing is cost-effective for the average restaurant, but it would be cool to see, wouldn’t it?
