Voyagers is Lord of the Flies like you’ve never seen it before – in outer space! It’s a believable futuristic, sci-fi thriller.

Seriously, this HBO Max movie starring Colin Farrell was surprisingly good. It was a very clear nod to Lord of the Flies – a book assigned in high school that kind of fkd me up for a while. The book was one of the few I read from cover to cover because I couldn’t put it down. In fact, I’d later read it again in adulthood.

The movie, Voyagers, takes place during and after the year 2063 when humans have made the earth nearly uninhabitable. The fate of humankind depends on colonizing a planet 86 years away. A space mission is planned where a group of children are birthed via artificial insemination from a pool of are super smart and diverse donors.

The mission objective is that the teenage/young adult children will make-up both the ship’s crew and the grandparents of the generation of space travelers who will colonize the earth. Colin Farrell is the single adult and caretaker of the crew of young adults. By the way, their exact ages are not clear.

The kid’s are intelligent, awkward, and dark. How you presume intelligent children with maladapted interpersonal skills might behave is probably exactly how you’ll watch them behave.

I challenge you to compare the main characters and plot to Lord of the Flies. The parallels are unmistakable.
