Since I can only put 7.25 gallons into my Honda Clarity’s gas tank, I’m going to switch over to mid-grade/91 octane.

I want to see if the HV can get more mileage out of the from the higher quality gas. After my last fill-up at a neighborhood Chevron, my HV mileage displayed that I’d get less than 300 miles. Actually, it said something like 275.

Normally after a fill-up, the HV gives me between 280-300 miles of estimated range. By the way, I should point out that the Clarity drives in only two modes: EV, which is the electric motor only, and HV, where it’s powered by the electric motor and the gas engine. There is no time that it’s not using the electric motor to turn the wheels.

It’s the electric motor help that gives this 4900 lbs 4-cylinder car a fuel economy of 40 miles per gallon. The path is accurate, by the way, that the HV should get 280 miles when the tank is full.

Right so, I want to see if the next higher quality gasoline can stretch the HV’s mileage higher. With the respect to average speed when driving on the highway, the higher octane makes sense. Also, I read in the Clarity’s manual that I can use 87 or higher.
