How Best to Change My SM3 Services Pricing

I’ve noticed a pattern with my website build clients that I need to correct or compensate for — specifically for my pricing if surfaces.

The scenario looks something like this: I offer a website build for a generally low price with the turnaround of too much. No when I set the price, I said it based on the model of “Done with you” service.

In website building, my Done with You approach looks like this:

I’m going to hear what your website needs to do, present a design solution idea, and I’m going to need you to provide me specific items that will allow me to finish the website.

In short, I’m going to build it, but you have to help. When the client is proactive, responsive, and delivers what I need, the system works. I finish on time. We’re both happy.

The problem happens when a client blows timelines, delays getting me things that I need, and/or misses zoom calls. Keep in mind that I’ve given the client a Done with You price. Now, I’m in the position where I have to decide between charging the person more because they’re adding to the timeline of my finish in their product or delivering an unfinished product to keep on track with the timelines set on their contract.

In either scenario, my Done with You approach now becomes a Done for You approach — where Done for You services have significantly higher starting prices. It’s uncomfortable, but a decision has to be made because I literally have other s*** to do.

So, where does this leave me with the siding on how I’m going to change my prices to protect myself from clients who delay their own projects and my work on others? I think the solution is that I’m going to price my services based on a Done for You model. I’m sure I can do it in a way that doesn’t punish the awesome clients who help projects launch on schedule.

The solution that makes sense to me is to set my starting/lowest prices with the expectation that a client is getting Done for You level work. It would definitely remove the stress of not knowing if the next client will be one that causes website projects to drags behind their due dates. I’m all for less stress.

Peace of mind is very important to me. Also, I made this job for myself. If I’m not shaping the work to suit me, then what’s the point? Ya know?
