In the shower, I had a moment of existential reflection while thinking about my kids and teaching them about why we need people.
I had a thought that it’s people that give us purpose.
Consider a situation where you end up alone on a deserted tropical island. In the scenario, there’s enough vegetation, food, wildlife and other resources for you to survive.
I imagine that a very small fraction of us would be just fine living out the rest of our life alone on that island. However, I believe the majority of us would do everything we could to get back to people. Without other people, how can we satisfy the needs of that part of our brain that allows us to feel lonely?
How could many us check off the top two layers of Maslow‘s Hierarchy of Needs without other people? I know that it’s possible, of course. But I can’t actually imagine that being my reality.
