Before now, I’d never paid much attention to the lyrics in the song Careless Whisper. Throughout my life, the epicness of the ballad by George Michael has been it’s ironic use in romantic comedies and parodies – think of sexy saxophone guy, for example. Suffice to say, it’s been a difficult song to take place.
It was a cover of the Careless Whisper playing in the background of episodes 5 of the Watchmen limited series that inspired me to notice the lyrics. It so happened that I was watching with closed-captioned switched on – as I do. Anyway, the lyrics are pure poetry.
Seriously, it’s a strong but vague song. It reminds me of an instance where and good friend and I crossed a line sexually, then I continued my escapades as if she were another hookup. After that, I promised I’d never get busy with a co-worker again.
But George Michael was so bent about his transgression, he promised to never dance again – at least not in the way he danced with that friend he lost. Can you imagine bring a musical artist and taking a vow to never slow dance again? That’s serious guilt.
So, here is a version with song lyrics and some other versions of Careless Whisper I’ve find on YouTube, including the original…George Michael is the original singer, right??
Enjoy!
