I remember the first time I heard this song. I was watching Snatch. The song played in the background of Mickey (Brad Pitt’s character) and his gypsy family going full rager – drinking and fighting in circles.
I’ve always imagined the song being inspired by the beauty of any one African woman’s infinite shades of brown skin. The song pops into my head sometimes when I see a woman with stunningly golden brown skin. I wasn’t far off about the subject material!
One Part Girl, One Part Heroine
Turns out the song writer, Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers did write Gold Brown about his tan-able girlfriend soft of: he says the song was also a little bit about heroin.
This is the song in my head today: Golden Brown by The Stranglers (1982). Enjoy! And treat yourself to the Mariachi Band version also lead by Cornwell. It’s excellent.
