Today during a shower, I thought of ways to negate – or better refute – the concept of an objective right and wrong.
I don’t believe in the idea anymore that a certain action is a right action or one a wrong. Right and wrong will always be subjective. It can only be except for when it’s part of a constructed system with a specific set of parameters/rules/laws.
Because right and wrong depend on an individual’s interpretation – meaning subjective – it makes sense to me that what is good for me and/or what is good for you is a more appropriate scale.
Good for You, Good for Me
When a thing is good for you and good for me, it’s a right thing.
When a thing is good for you and bad for me, it’s right for only one of us and therefore wrong.
Similarly, when a thing is bad for you and good for me, it’s a gain for only me and a loss for you and therefore wrong.
Bad for you, bad for me is clearly wrong.
What I mean to say is if something is only right when that something is good for everyone involved.
Thank you for not throwing tomatoes at my Ted Talk.
