Disclaimer: I haven’t read the book (Healing ADD by Daniel G. Amen, M.D.) or opened it
The title stabs, vexes, unsettles me
It reminds me of when Storm told Rogue, “They can’t cure us… Nothing’s wrong with you.”(X-Men: The Last Stand)
Or later Dark Phoenix when the Professor told young Jean Grey “You’re not broken.”
I Hope the Book Helps
I want the book and others like it to be helpful for the afflicted and the family. Also, I hope it suggests a remedy where ADD/ADHD medication is accompanied with therapy
No one should should grow well into their 30’s feeling like they’re broken
I’m talking about me. That last sentence is based on a real world Case Study
One Idea for Helping Kids
Introducing an issue without a fix action is just complaining. So, here’s a suggestion for adults treating children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD:
Give them a person – a neutral party – to explain the ‘Why’ they’re on meds, to ask questions that reveal what the kid understands about the condition and the system(s) this treatment helps them navigate, and to guide them in filling in the grey areas where they inevitably judge the condition as a strength or weakness
