Happiness is Subjective: Debunked the Money and Happiness Adage

Today in a conversation about past relationships, a friend mentioned the age old adage that ‘money can’t buy happiness.’

I politely disagreed.

Experiencing happiness is subjective. This is an absolute, and will always be true.

I’ve heard the saying for years and never thought to challenge it. In fact, I think I first heard as a child said during a church sermon.

The problem with the saying is that it presumes that happy is the same for everyone – as if there is a standard or universal ideal of happiness.

If you want to pick a fight, ask the next person to use the phrase what defines happiness for them.

The list of things that make each of us happy is no more is as unique as our retinal patterns.
